Data detox for educators

"Data Detox for Educators" is a training program that explores effective educational practices using the Tactical Tech's "Data Detox for Youth" materials. It was launched in 2023 and offered three formats: a one-day in-person workshop, an online course, and a comprehensive experience with ongoing support throughout the year.

1-day Trainings (Online or In-person)

In this format, Casa Hacker's facilitators present and discuss the Data Detox for Youth materials. We cover the booklet provided by Tactical Tech, along with slide presentations, group activities, and other resources that can be used to engage young people on this topic. Our hope is that, after the training, more educators will utilize these materials and share this content with young people.

In this context, we have three main goals:

  • Introduce privacy and security concepts to educators: Making them more familiar with these topics, which, despite being widely discussed, are often misunderstood by the general public (especially in Brazil).

  • Increase educators' confidence and ability to teach these subjects to young people: Emphasizing the importance of addressing these topics with young people and motivating educators to work on them.

  • Equip educators to effectively use the kit with young people: Facilitating their class preparation process and minimizing the effort required to share the content with young people.

Like any training format, our 1-day meeting has its advantages and disadvantages. The key ones are presented in the chart below.

Pros
Cons

The 1-day meeting allows for the training to be conducted online, making it easier to reach people in remote locations.

It's a more streamlined training, which facilitates its integration into educators' routines.

It's more affordable and easier to implement compared to the full experience.

As it is a shorter meeting, it is less tailored to the specific needs of individual educators.

Tracking results and evaluating impact is more complex, as we do not have knowledge of how educators implemented the content or faced challenges, and we don't have data about the number of young people who were positively influenced by learning about digital well-being."

Full Experience - Training of Trainers (5-6 months program)

In this training model, a more enduring partnership is established with another organization responsible for educating young people in any setting (whether basic, formal, or informal education). The complete experience requires prior contact, alignment of needs, training, and support during the teaching of content to young people.

If a partner organization is interested, an initial mapping of the needs of the community (both educators and young people), the social context in which the organization is inserted, and the reality of the young people and educators who will be impacted is necessary. Thus, with a collective effort, the content covered in the training is defined, allowing for the inclusion of topics that are not present in the Data Detox for Youth kit, as well as the revision and adaptation of the material used in the training (inclusion of different activities involving the content, other types of presentation, etc.).

In a second moment, at least one in-person meeting with the educators is held with the aim of training them in the content of digital security and privacy, misinformation, and digital well-being (addressed in the Data Detox Kit), and facilitating the process of "lesson preparation" for the future, since the educators will have open-source materials available for use and will already be able to work on the concepts addressed. At this time, valuable discussions arise about the role of the educator, about technology in the lives of young people, and even about possible tools to be applied.

After the in-person meeting, two tools are vital in building the trajectory of the educators in our complete experience: mentoring and asynchronous support.

  • Mentoring: the Casa Hacker training team holds periodic online meetings with the training educators to monitor the implementation of the proposals, assist in the development of projects and use of technologies, answer questions, and maintain the engagement and motivation of the educator team. In addition, this is a great opportunity to learn about new methodologies and applications related to the digital lives of young people, which may arise from the training educators.

  • Asynchronous support: in addition to periodic meetings, our proposal is to create a group communication channel (WhatsApp, Telegram, email, Slack) where educators can interact with trainers, fostering a sense of community and partnership. Communication will be more agile and everyone can contribute. This channel helps to solve more urgent issues that educators may have during the application of the activities developed after the in-person meeting.

After the training period, a closing moment is important, where educators will provide a final report of their experience teaching about digital well-being. This moment can be concretized in a document of experience reports, which will help in the evolution of the training process.

Pros

Can be customized to meet the specific needs of partner educators and institutions.

Fosters a sense of community, strengthens our relationship with trained educators, and provides ongoing support for implementing activities.

Facilitates impact assessment through continuous and long-term reporting by trained educators.

Requires participants to have a higher degree of scheduling flexibility.

The training has a higher cost due to its longer duration.
